Medium Category Type Ratings & Training

Operating a Medium Category RPA (up to 150 kg MTOW) requires more than holding a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL). Unlike a standard RePL, which authorises you to operate aircraft within a specific category and weight class, Medium Category operations require a CASA Type Rating for each aircraft model you intend to operate.

Type Ratings are available alongside our RePL courses or can be scheduled separately to meet your operational requirements.

Type Rating Assessment

A Type Rating assessment is designed for experienced operators who are already proficient on the aircraft.

To successfully complete the assessment you must demonstrate:

• Detailed knowledge of the aircraft, including:
  • Performance and limitations
  • Battery systems and endurance
  • Aircraft weights
  • Payloads and sensors
  • Normal and emergency procedures
• Sound understanding of Medium Category operational requirements
• Competency in conducting a complete pre-flight inspection
• Practical flying proficiency, including:
  • Manual flight sequences
  • Aircraft handling
  • Automated mission planning and execution appropriate to the aircraft's operational role

During the assessment, the examiner cannot provide coaching or assistance. Candidates are expected to have thoroughly studied the manufacturer's operating documentation and be fully familiar with the aircraft before attending.

Training Type Rating

For most operators, we strongly recommend completing our combined Training and Type Rating program.

This option provides structured instruction before the formal assessment, significantly improving both competence and confidence.

Online Learning

Prior to attending practical training, participants complete self-paced online learning covering:

• Aircraft systems and components
• Aircraft limitations
• Manufacturer operating procedures
• Medium Category operational requirements
• Knowledge assessment to confirm readiness for practical training

Practical Training

Practical training focuses on developing safe and efficient operational skills, including:

• Aircraft familiarisation
• Flight planning
• Manual flight exercises
• Automated mission planning
• Payload operation
• Normal and emergency procedures
• Operational best practice

Training continues until your instructor is satisfied you are ready to undertake the formal Type Rating assessment.

Type Rating Assessment

The practical assessment includes:

• Aircraft-specific oral questioning
• Pre-flight inspection
• Flight assessment
• Automated mission assessment
• Safe operation of aircraft systems and payloads

As with all CASA assessments, instructors cannot provide assistance or coaching during the examination.

For this reason, we recommend the combined Training Type Rating package unless you are already highly experienced on the aircraft.

New to Medium Category Operations?

If you have little or no drone experience, we can guide you through the entire certification process.

1. Obtain your initial Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) in the sub-25 kg category.
2. Complete Medium Category theory and operational training.
