Uncrewed Aviation Australia is proud to share that Damien Boyer (head of Uncrewed Aviation Australia), was recognised with the Innovation Award at the 2025 Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) Awards.
The award acknowledges our teams ongoing commitment to innovation and Damiens leadership in expanding how UAV technology is safely, legally, and practically applied across Surf Life Saving operations in Queensland.
This recognition reflects not just one project or initiative, but years of focused work to build scalable drone capability that directly supports frontline operations, enhances safety outcomes, and prepares the organisation for the future of aviation-enabled lifesaving.
Driving Real-World Drone Capability, Not Just Theory
From the outset, Uncrewed Aviation Australia has been focused on real-world operational outcomes, not hypothetical use cases.
Our work with SLSQ has centred on ensuring drone technology is:
- Operationally relevant
- Legally compliant
- Scalable across multiple locations
- Designed to support real decision-making in high-pressure environments
This approach has underpinned our growth in Extended Visual Line of Sight (EVLOS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) training as we work towards enabling pilots to move beyond basic visual operations and into advanced, mission-critical applications.
These capabilities are essential for:
- Large-area coastal surveillance
- Shark spotting and marine hazard monitoring
- Search and rescue coordination
- Incident response across complex environments
By developing training pathways aligned with real operational needs, we are ensuring pilots are not just licensed but operationally ready.
Advancing EVLOS and BVLOS Training for Operational Use
One of the key areas recognised through this award is our continued expansion of advanced operation training pathways, designed specifically for organisations operating in dynamic, real-world environments like Surf Life Saving.
Rather than treating advanced operations like EVLOS and BVLOS as standalone or experimental, we have worked closely to:
- Build training that aligns with live operational requirements
- Prepare pilots for structured, multi-asset operations
- Ensure risk management, communications, and decision-making are embedded into training delivery
This focus ensures that advanced drone operations are not only achievable, but sustainable, supporting long-term capability growth across the organisation.
Innovation That Serves a Purpose
Innovation, in the Surf Life Saving context, must always serve a clear purpose: keeping people safe.
This award recognises that innovation isn’t about adopting technology for its own sake, it’s about:
- Thoughtful implementation
- Strong governance
- Ongoing training and support
- Building systems that people can rely on when it matters most
Damien’s leadership, supported by the broader Uncrewed Aviation Australia team, continues to focus on exactly that.
Looking Ahead
While this recognition is an honour, it also reinforces our responsibility to continue pushing forward.
As drone technology evolves, so too must the way we train, operate, and integrate it into lifesaving operations. Our commitment remains focused on:
- Expanding advanced operational capability
- Supporting SLSQ with future-ready aviation solutions
- Ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence remain at the core of everything we do
We thank Surf Life Saving Queensland for the recognition and look forward to continuing this work together.
