Over the Easter holidays, while most kids were enjoying some well-earned time off, a passionate group of students from Buderim Mountain State School were out on the beach—meeting with our professional drone pilots as part of a forward-thinking project about marine safety. And we have to say... we were seriously impressed.
These students are part of the Buderim Circuit Crew, a team competing in the 2024–2025 FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, themed "SUBMERGEDâ„ ." Their mission? To design and propose an innovative solution to a real-world problem facing our oceans. Their idea is bold, inspiring, and closely aligned with what we do here at Uncrewed Aviation Australia.
Their Big Idea: The "Beach Guardian"
The Buderim Circuit Crew’s project, titled Beach Guardian, aims to create a more sustainable and non-invasive alternative to traditional shark nets. Using a combination of AI-powered drones and deployable electromagnetic buoys, their system is designed to detect and deter sharks before they come too close to beachgoers.
How Does it Work?
We loved hearing how they’d considered key operational challenges—like water turbidity, species behaviour, and electrical conductivity in saltwater. Their thinking is not only creative but grounded in practical understanding.
A Hands-on Learning Experience
During their visit, the students observed one of our beach drone operations in action. They chatted with our drone pilots about current real-world technologies we use in shark detection, coastal surveillance, and lifesaving support.
Together we Discussed:
- The types of drones and sensors used in our work
- How artificial intelligence is applied in marine monitoring
- The challenges of flying in coastal environments
- What it takes to become a drone pilot or designer in this space
- Their curiosity, initiative, and teamwork were everything this industry needs in its next generation of innovators.
Why This Matters to Us
At Uncrewed Aviation Australia, we’re proud to be part of a broader mission through our parent organisation, Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ)—to keep communities safe while embracing new technology.
Seeing students like the Buderim Circuit Crew engaging with drone operations at such a young age is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Their Beach Guardian concept reflects the kind of innovation we need to solve complex challenges like shark mitigation in ways that protect both people and marine life.
It also underscores the importance of STEM education, community partnerships, and early exposure to real-world applications. The future of drone technology doesn’t just live in training courses and commercial projects—it lives in the imagination of the next generation.
Let’s inspire the next generation of drone pilots, innovators, and ocean stewards—because the skies (and seas) are only the beginning.
We want to give a huge shoutout to the Buderim Circuit Crew and their incredible teachers and mentors for their commitment, creativity, and courage to explore big ideas. Spending their school holidays chasing knowledge on the sand is no small feat.
If you or your school are working on projects related to drones, coastal monitoring, or ocean innovation, get in touch—we’re always keen to support educational programs that align with our mission.
